How to play Word Duel online

1. Start a room and share the link. You both get the same five-letter secret word.
2. Guess whenever you want. You both play at the same time, so there are no turns.
3. Green means the letter is right and in the right place. Yellow means it is in the word somewhere else. Grey means it is not in the word at all.
4. You can see the colours on your opponent's board but not their letters, so you know how close they are without being handed the answer.
5. Whoever solves it in fewer guesses wins. Six guesses each, then the word is revealed and you can copy the result grid to share.
6. Before you start you can pick four, five or six letters, and turn on hard mode, where you have to use every clue you've already been shown in your next guess.

Why Word Duel works over a distance

Wordle is great on your own, but comparing squares afterwards isn't the same as actually playing someone. Word Duel puts you both on the same word at the same time and lets you watch the race happen.

You see your opponent's colours, but their letters never leave the server. That's enough to watch them closing in without giving away the answer. Seeing three greens on their second row is stressful.

Once five letters feels easy, turn on hard mode. Greens stay where they are and yellows have to reappear somewhere, which takes away the trick of burning a guess on five fresh letters. You're only held to your own clues, never to what the other person has figured out.

Because both players type at once, a game lasts as long as the slower solver and no longer. It's one of the quickest games here, and usually ends in a rematch.

Questions

Can we play with four or six letter words?

Yes. Pick the length before you start the room. Four letters is quick and quite hard, since there is less room for a clue to narrow things down. Six is the gentlest of the three.

What does hard mode change?

Any letter you have turned green has to stay in that position, and any letter you have turned yellow has to appear somewhere in your next guess. It only holds you to your own clues, not your opponent's.

Is this multiplayer Wordle?

Pretty much. One five-letter secret word, six guesses, green and yellow clues, but you're racing another person live.

Can I see my opponent's guesses?

You see the colour pattern of each row they submit, not the letters. You know how close they are, but you can't copy their work.

Do we take turns?

No. You both guess at the same time, as fast as you can think of words.

Is there a new word every game?

Yes. Every room and every rematch draws a fresh word, so you can play as many rounds as you like in a sitting.
